Are you a documentary filmmaker who will be attending the SDF Convening and has a work-in-progress at any stage of development? Are you looking for a supportive environment to give your pitch a test run? Or do you want to help support your fellow filmmakers by providing them feedback?
After more than a decade of presenting Peer Pitch in the Washington DC area as well as regional programs in California and Illinois, Docs In Progress is expanding this program to the South through a partnership with the Southern Documentary Fund.
This is not an industry pitch, but rather is the pitch you want to do before such an opportunity so you can get valuable feedback from fellow filmmakers on what is working and what could be improved with your pitch, your trailer (if you have one), or the concept of your documentary. Constructive feedback from peers in a nurturing environment will help to identify strengths and areas for improvement in projects. Participants will also develop skills and comfort in verbally describing their projects among peers before trying their pitches out on industry. Even those not pitching will come away with valuable insights and new connections which can guide your own filmmaking.
Films which have been presented at past Peer Pitch workshops when they were in their early stages have gone on to be funded by Sundance Documentary Fund, ITVS, Garrett Scott Development Grant; been accepted into industry pitching opportunities such as IFP’s Independent Film Week, HotDocs Forum, DocsBarcelona, and Points North Pitch; and have gone on to play festivals, television, and community screenings around the world. Participants have also made connections with other filmmakers which have led to later collaborations. Some of the films which have come through Peer Pitch have included Let the Fire Burn, Slingshot, Kandahar Journals, Sweetheart Deal, Big Sonia, Out in the Silence, Deej, Indivisible, Drokpa, The Lost Dream, Uranium Drive-In, Love Gilda (this year's opening night film of the Tribeca Film Festival), and Transmilitary (this year's Audience Award winner at SXSW).
New this year: In addition to our first-ever Peer Pitch South, we may select one or more "best of" Peer Pitches to return to Washington DC in the fall for the Docs In Progress Pitch at the Double Exposure Film Festival.
WHEN/WHERE IS THIS HAPPENING?
Peer Pitch takes place on Friday, June 1 between 4:00-6:00 pm. The workshop will take place as part of the Southern Documentary Fund's annual convening in Durham, North Carolina at the Full Frame Theater on the American Tobacco campus.
WHO MAY ATTEND?
Participation (for both pitchers and observer/feedback givers) is open only to those who are also attending the Southern Documentary Fund Convening. While there is no additional charge to pitch at or attend Peer Pitch, a separate registration through Docs In Progress is required.
In true democratic fashion, pitching slots are available on a first registered, first accepted basis (subject to confirmation with SDF that the filmmaker has also registered for the Convening). We expect these will go quickly since space is limited to 6 pitching teams. (If you find all pitching spots are taken and you want to pitch, please sign up for the waitlist). Projects may be at any stage of development. In the past, experienced filmmakers, first time filmmakers, and even film students have pitched their docs in progress.
We also welcome filmmakers to attend who want to give feedback to their colleagues, but don’t necessarily have a project to share. If this is you, please sign up for an Observer/Feedback Giver spot. If you are not a filmmaker but work in some other aspect of the documentary industry, you are also welcome to attend and provide feedback, but note that this is not an industry pitch.
